Recording in your home studio Part 4 – Recording the drum kit with one sE Electronics 4400a

PLEASE VIEW IN HQ – The 4th part in the series, recording the drum kit with one sE 4400a mic (Available here – http://bit.ly/ikjr6j ). Here I go over how I have recorded the drum kit with just one mic, the things I’m looking for in the recording and you can make the most of what you have at home. All audio recording is at 96k.

Kit List –
Apogee Duet audio interface – £335 (or you could use a RME Babyface – £430)
sE Electronics 4400a microphone – £450
Headphones AKG 271mK II – £110
Mic cable – £25
Mic Stand – £60
Pop screen – £20

Total is about a £1000 but always beat stores down on the price especially if you get the lot in one go, they will always drop…
I’m using Logic Pro 9 but you can use any DAW software (Cubase 5 Essential £100, Logic Express 9 £149 etc).

The drum file wav’s are up on SoundCloud – http://soundcloud.com/maplewood-studio/sets/recording-in-your-home-studio

Setting up and recording in your home studio Part 2 – Mic & Interface – sE Electronics 4400a

This 2nd part of this series quickly goes over audio interfaces and the choice of microphone for this £1000 package.

The sE Electronics 4400a is an excellent microphone and it will serve you well for years to come, I will recording my drum kit, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals and anything else I can find that will fit into the track with this mic. I will D.I the bass as that is what I would recommend you do at this level of recording.
Check out sE’s website for all the info…

I have chosen to use the Apogee Duet audio interface for my project but if your on a PC check out the RME Babyface which is slightly more expensive but is compatible with Mac & PC and is in fact more versatile/expandable. The important thing to remember is that you want quality over quantity here as I explained in the video -

There are obviously other options with AVID or M-Audio products available that come with ProTools if you want to go down that route but the audio interface is not of the same quality as either of the above, in my opinion.

I hope you find all this useful and helpful, now, lets go record some drums!

Stick out

Best Recording Guitar tips with Amp on computer in the Studio at home

http://www.eComputerRecordingSoftware.com – check out my blog and get my FREE ebook ” Music Production 101 ”

Recording Guitar through an amp is simple if you know the basics. There is also more than one way to skin a cat as they say .

In this video I show you some tips how I produce a song from scratch in my home studio, starting with the brief to recording guitar through a vintage amp through a condenser microphone to recording the vocals to Audio Recorder Sofware. The brief was to compose a song in a Motown RnB style . I think we did a great job . What do you think ??

Please tell me if you can recognize which song we used as a guide to base our song on ?? If you get it right I will pick to give one person my next music production course “Advanced Music Production ” for free .
