Home studio recording software?

I’m a guitar player and use a PC. Looking for a good home recording software at a reasonable price. I don’t play in a band anymore so need something that will work well with or offers decent virtual instruments. Was thinking Sonar Home Studio 7xl but have been reading mixed reviews. Suggestions?

The best one is the virtual studio made by Propel head called "REASON v4"

All you need is a $90 keyboard to plug in the USB port and you are set. That little keyboard ( 2octave) will produce anything from guitar to piano to drums. The recording on REASON is amazing and very high digital quality.
And the guitar SOUNDS like a real guitar, acoustic or otherwise and the piano is really really dead-on as far as sound.
No need for anything special. Even a regular audio card works with this software.

That is one of the popular ones floating around. Here is the link.

Just a note BTW. Sonar sort of copied from REASON with their virtual interface :)

Our son uses Sibelius and reports himself satisfied. IIRC, they have a free trial which includes only some of the features, but it lets you see if it’s what you want.

I agree with the suggestion of Reason. It’s a great program.

As an additional recommendation, I really like MOTU Digital Performer. I’ve been using it in my studio for years. It isn’t really built around virtual instruments, but as a general recording software… it’s pretty awesome.
