Home recording studio?
I want to build my own recording studio at home for under 1000 bucks. Can you tell me what I need to buy and the best brands? Thanks a lot in advance!
Oh, by the way I need to be able to record on a backing track from a CD.
First of all, a lot of time.. THen if you have some $$$ I’d get…. an apple macmini w/ at least 1gig ram($499), a digidesign mbox ($189), some alesis active monitors($200), shure sm57 microphone ($79), sony mdr-7506 headphones ($100). 2 – 1/4" cables. 1 microphone cable 25′ (xlr) and a mic stand($50). You should find what you can on Craigslist, that way it is way less expensive than guitar center or wherever and you can usually try it out with little or no pressure from the person you’re buying it from. if you want to be making beats, you may need some VST software (virtual instruments) like ‘reason’ or a drum machine- you can get old drum machines from the 80’s and 90’s fairly cheap used. usually around $100-200. like i said though, you’ll need a lot of time to really get good at it and for things to start soundling like you think they should.
Your budget doesn’t allow you to purchase any new items but you may be able to get what you need on ebay or craig’s list.
Look for a budget soundcard (used) that comes with recording software like Sonar or Cubase or Logic. Most likely they will be lite versions of the recording software but they will do for now. You do not have any money in your budget for monitors so I would suggest the Sony 7605 headphones – standard in every studio. You’ll have to learn to mix off those until you can budget otherwise.
Finally, get a Shure SM57. This microphone is standard in every studio and will sound better than a cheap condenser microphone any day. It can take gain for days and you’ll never get rid of it even as you expand and gather more microphones.
You’ll need a microphone stand, a microphone cable, and some room treatment for the space you will be working in.
$1000 is really tough to pull off but you can do it if you are patient and willing to buy your stuff used.
Good luck
