external hard disks, with standard video jacks, connected to TV and receivers, used for digital recording ?

its a device exactly like old VCRs ( video cassette recorders ), but fuctioning completely digital. it records on its internal HDD.
it has multiple inputs for S-video, and standard composite cables.
what is that unit called ? i want to buy one, but i donno what to look for exactly !

What you want is a DVR. You can get Standalone ones such as TiVo and some DVD recorders with built in HDD.

You can get providers DVRs, which are basically their receivers with an HDD that records their digital signal directly.

Lastly would be a computer DVR, which you can get a card for your computer that can record from antenna, cable or a box.
