The camera will either record until the memory card is full, until a certain file size is reached, or for a set maximum time. The manual will tell you which, and what any limit might be. If you don't have yours, I am sure you can find an electronic copy on the Canon website. If the camera records in AVI, the maximum file size is 2GB. 3 minutes shouldn't come anywhere near that.
