Home recording studio?

I want to build my own recording studio at home for under 1000 bucks. Can you tell me what I need to buy and the best brands? Thanks a lot in advance!
Oh, by the way I need to be able to record on a backing track from a CD.

First of all, a lot of time.. THen if you have some $$$ I’d get…. an apple macmini w/ at least 1gig ram($499), a digidesign mbox ($189), some alesis active monitors($200), shure sm57 microphone ($79), sony mdr-7506 headphones ($100). 2 – 1/4" cables. 1 microphone cable 25′ (xlr) and a mic stand($50). You should find what you can on Craigslist, that way it is way less expensive than guitar center or wherever and you can usually try it out with little or no pressure from the person you’re buying it from. if you want to be making beats, you may need some VST software (virtual instruments) like ‘reason’ or a drum machine- you can get old drum machines from the 80’s and 90’s fairly cheap used. usually around $100-200. like i said though, you’ll need a lot of time to really get good at it and for things to start soundling like you think they should.

Home studio recording software?

I’m a guitar player and use a PC. Looking for a good home recording software at a reasonable price. I don’t play in a band anymore so need something that will work well with or offers decent virtual instruments. Was thinking Sonar Home Studio 7xl but have been reading mixed reviews. Suggestions?

The best one is the virtual studio made by Propel head called "REASON v4"

All you need is a $90 keyboard to plug in the USB port and you are set. That little keyboard ( 2octave) will produce anything from guitar to piano to drums. The recording on REASON is amazing and very high digital quality.
And the guitar SOUNDS like a real guitar, acoustic or otherwise and the piano is really really dead-on as far as sound.
No need for anything special. Even a regular audio card works with this software.

That is one of the popular ones floating around. Here is the link.

Just a note BTW. Sonar sort of copied from REASON with their virtual interface :)

How can i set up my own home recording studio?(I have logic, reason and Qbase along side a midi keyboard)?

Hi guys, i wanted to know how i can set up my own home recording studio. At the moment i have a good computer, in terms of software i have logic, reason and Qbase. I also have a midi keyboard and a microphone i just don’t know how to connect it all up….i want to make backing tracks and also buy a sampler….PLEASE HELP!!

Well there are a few options you have….

1. If your MIDI Keyboard has an XLR input, you can plug the MIC in there.
2. You can get a 1/4"-1/8" converter and plug your MIC directly into your computer sound card (the quality is not going to be good at all).
3. You can purchase a USB audio interface, to plug your MIC and keyboard into, that will convert it into a digital signal to record in Cubase.

As for connecting it all up, you need the following:
1. MIDI to USB cable (this should of came with your keyboard). This will get the Keyboard to the Computer so you can work with Reason and then do Re-Wire to run it with Cubase.
2. XLR-1/4" cable with a 1/4"-1/8" converter – this will allow you to go directly to the soundcard with your microphone. Again the quality of this, is very poor. You either need a Mixer or a Audio Interface to get good quality.

You have a very powerful tool with Reason and Cubase and a MIDI keyboard. Backing Tracks would be simple with the software you have. Good Luck!

At-home recording studio software???

I already have pre-recorded instrumental music (i.e. Karaoke-type stuff) and all I really want to do is just record my voice over the music…add some effects and stuff to fix it up a bit…and then save it to burn to a CD. All the programs I’ve tried, seem to be for people who can play instruments, or have some sort of knowledge of reading music and whatnot. I just want something easy to understand, that will give a nice sounding result.

Any suggestions????

Thanx <3

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ not a bad free one.. cakewalk not too bad lots of available plugins.. if you have a creative sound card then the mediasource player that came with it works just fine.

What is truly the best Home Recording Studio Operating System?

I just need to know for mine, I am using windows XP PRO at the moment, please do not say Windows XP Home, or Vista or anything windows, I have tried them all, Thanks!.

Primarily it comes down to hardware and which program you use. Operating system has very little to do with it. Find software you like and pick an operating system accordingly

What do you need for a home recording studio?

I just need to know what i need to buy to make a home recording studio. i am a songwriter/singer and i write great songs, and i have the perfect beats in my head. I was thinking of getting cubase 5. i have no equipment at all. can someone help me?

This is a great time to begin a project like this. With just a computer and a few pieces of gear you can make a great sounding home recording studio.

What you’ll need:
- A computer
- Audio Interface
- Basic Recording Software (bundled with most Audio Interfaces)
- Large Diaphragm Condenser Mic

Assuming you already have a home computer, I’d recommend starting with a USB Audio Interface such as this one:
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-Fast-Track-Pro-Mobile-USB-Audio-MIDI-Interface?sku=241710

This gives you everything you need to get started with your recording including:
- phantom power supply (powers the condenser mic)
- microphone preamp (boosts the weak mic level signal)
- analog / digital converters (converts electrical mic signal to a digital form that computers can understand)
- basic recording software (for recording your tracks on the computer)

Moving on I’d go with a large diaphragm condenser mic for recording your vocals:
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/AudioTechnica-AT2020-Large-Diaphragm-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone?sku=270620

In general for a mic — I’d recommend a large diaphragm condenser style because of its sensitivity to the human voice. A dynamic mic, for example, would still work but it would lose some of the nuances of your performance.

This setup should get you started… spending much more on mics and preamps will probably not bring much better results unless your studio is an acoustically treated space.

If my initial assumption was wrong and you still need a computer too, then I’d recommend getting as much RAM as possible. This will help your recording sessions go smoothly.

Setting up home recording studio for less than 1K?

Excluding the new Mac book pro I am getting and various instruments I play, can I set up a decent home recording studio? What is the best software, mics, monitors, mixers I need to get? I mainly want to do pre-production at home and then work on the music at my friends’ more advanced studios. Any short lists and recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
