Where can I find good self recording music equipment?

I am wanting to record myself playing a line of music. Then I want to record my self playing another line of music. After that, I want to add the two lines together to hear them play at the same time. Where can I find the equipment and what software do I need to do this. I intend to play a trumpet and other various brass instruments, and a piano.

i’ve been in a band for a while now , and were looking to make a demo , we don’t have enough money for an apple mac , so what we need is recording equipment for normal computers but nothing to pricey

my husband plays electric guitar and has been wanting to record his music. but he has nothing to do it with and doesn’t want to go spend a bunch of money to get it professionally done.
i am wanting to get him some of the basic recording equipment to get him started and be able to record for christmas. and i have no experience in this. could you please point me in the right direction, on what you think i need?

If he is JUST recording a guitar, get him a 1 or 2 channel mixer or audio interface he can plug his guitar right into a "Line input" so that he can plug the mixer into a computer via usb, firewire, or just the regular headphone output or RCA outputs into the computer’s audio input. There are free programs to record into and the one I used to use was Audacity. Just set the input in the preferences to audio input so it can know where to get it from.

How much will it cost me to buy recording equipment and what will I need?

I have a guitar and keyboard. i would like to start recording my songs. I would also like to sing. How much will it cost me and what will i need?

Alright for singing a mic is one of the best ways to get good vocal recordings. The cost of a mic varies greatly so you may want to go to your local music shop and check out the mics.

Next for recording the best recording equipment that I know and personally own is something called a Toneport or POD Studio from the Line6 brand.

Now for the toneport its slightly cheaper because of its lower quality and will cost you:
around $190 for the UX1 and $240 for the UX2 which has two MIDI inputs (the wires for your guitar/keyboard) , it comes with gearbox software which is basically 15 amps in 1 on your computer.

The POD Studio has higher quality and also has comes with the POD Farm software which is basically an upgraded gearbox with better software.
The UX2 costs around $280-320.

So for the software you can bypass so you can hear your amp’s natural sound when recording and the POD Studio/Toneport both support mics, keyboards, guitars, bass etc.

From the liner notes:
One of Mercury’s “first ever” recordings made in the Soviet Union by non Soviet technicians and musical staff, using equipment brought in especially for the sessions. This unique recording event was made possible through the extensive cooperative efforts of top authorities in Moscow as well as officials in the U. S. A.
The first exploratory correspondence to this venture began as early as 1958. In spite of the continuing display of interest by both Mercury and representatives of the Soviet recording industry, progress toward the actual realization of the project was slow until the end of 1961.
The go-ahead signal for a series of recordings to be made in the Soviet Union by Mercury was flashed from Moscow in the spring of 1962, and the huge task of sending four and a half tons of recording equipment with recording staff from New York to Moscow was put into motion.
The specialized nature of the equipment involved (all housed in Mercury’s special mobile recording van) made it necessary to obtain innumerable special permits for shipment both in and out of the Soviet Union. At least five different organizations of the Soviet government were involved in arranging the numerous artistic and technical aspects of the sessions.
At all times and in all circumstances, the Soviet organizations were unfailingly cooperative and helpful. Compromises came about easily; both sides were aware of the magnitude of the project and perceived the necessity for continual minor adjustments.
The recording sessions themselves were a source of great interest to the Soviet engineers and technicians, as was the technical installation brought in by the visiting Americans. They were frank in their admiration for the advanced technical procedures used by the Mercury personnel, and the Mercury people were equally gratified by excellence of the musicians and the acoustical qualities of the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. And everyone was impressed with the give-and-take conditions and friendliness which had made this international cultural exchange finally possible.

Guns N’ Roses – Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door (San Diego, 88)

It’s not every day you see a recording like this surface. From what I’ve gathered there was no known source to this show in the trading circles. I searched the internet high & low and nothing pertaining to this show turned up.So… here it is !
Guns & Roses in their prime, the boys are playing a pretty tight set and Axl’s voice is strong, singing on all cylinders hitting the highs & the lows this night. At the time this show was recorded, Guns & Roses were showcasing new songs from their “G’nR Lies” album. The master cassette used for the transfer was starting to suffer from “tape oxidation” at the very beginning and at the end of the show-you’ll probably not notice that too much as very best efforts had been made in the digital restoration part of doing this production. You are really going to like this show! There is feed back coming from the speakers every now and then and no noise or hiss reduction was used in this production. Some bass eq to balance was added to this recording, and the reason for that is the taper doesn’t recall where he was standing when he recorded this show, he recalls he was extremely stoned on marijuana and mentioned that it was loud as in that Montezuma Hall at SDSU. This is evident in the recording itself, the band is almost overpowering the taper’s recording
equipment.

Home recording equipment: What is the part that plugs the microphones into the computer called?

I dont know what this is called. Im very new to home recording. Please help!

You need an "Audio Interface" to get a microphone signal into the computer.
The audio interface connects to the computer through a USB cable.
The microphone connects to the microphone input (preamp) of the interface with an XLR microphone cable.

The voltage from the microphone is amplified by the preamp and converted to digital. The data is transferred to the computer and can be accessed by your recording software. To listen to what you’ve recorded you need to connect headphones or speakers to the outputs of the audio interface.
Audio interfaces usually come with some decent software to get you started.
