What is the best set up for home recording of vocals and guitar?

Really hoping i can get an answer as i have been home recording for about a year and a bit and have experimented a lot but never quite got it right. What Im looking for is a vocals mic, a mic for capturing guitar (maybe small diaphragm condenser mic) and a pre amp (i was thinking maybe apogee duet as the 2 inputs) what im looking for is a really nice result sounding really good quality wise. Thanks

One of the very best mics for recording an acoustic guitar is the Shure SM57 – http://www.guitarcenter.com/Shure-SM57-Instrument-Vocal-Mic-100038239-i1126420.gc

The best inexpensive vocal mic for recording is the RODE NT1-A – http://www.guitarcenter.com/Rode-Microphones-NT1-A-Condenser-Mic-Bundle-105619399-i1474748.gc

Now, if you want to vocals and your guitar to really sound high quality and very professional, I recommend using a BOSS VE-20 vocal performer to process the vocal mic http://www.guitarcenter.com/Boss-VE-20-Vocal-Effects-Processor-105654529-i1474806.gc
and a BOSS AD or AC acoustic effects processor.

As far as recording software and a broadcast quality sound card and USB computer interface goes, you can’t beat the AVID Mbox mini – http://www.guitarcenter.com/Avid-Pro-Tools-LE-Mbox-Mini-3–3rd-Gen–106091184-i1552697.gc

With this setup, you will be able to produce the kind of high quality recordings that you can sell on iTunes r Amazon.com and even your local indie radio station will play them for you.

With that setup, you will be able to produce your own music that sounds this good – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ7gUcEPaGs

Home Recording Boot Camp TV – What is Mastering and a what does a mastering engineer do

Mastering explained by Veteran Engineer Ronan Chris Murphy. This is a non technical lesson on audio and CD mastering, describing a little bit about the history of mastering and how it has changed. Ronan also explains his own personal perspective on mastering. Filmed on location at Prosdocimi Recording in Italy. The video was shot on a break in the studio using only the existing light so the video quality is not the best.

How much would it cost to open a home recording studio?

I am doing a research assignment on the recording arts, and I am looking for realistic figures in terms of setting up a home studio. Equipment would be like a 32 input/channel mixer, new computer, new recording and mastering software, those big speaker things, the correct amount of mics for varied instruments. I tried to come up with the figure myself, but i don’t really know what I am looking for when I research the products because I don’t know what one would normally use.

Thanks!!

Here is a very basic equipment list:

Mixer:

http://www.amazon.com/Mackie-Mixer-Preamps-Stereo-Channels/dp/B000H2E9GM/ref=sr_1_12?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1303227915&sr=1-12

(most home studios do not need a mixer that big – a smaller studio type mixer would do just fine)

Better mixer:

Software:

Computer:

Monitors (big speaker things):

Mics:

There is a lot of miscellaneous items you will need too (cables, stands, furniture etc etc) – add another $2000 or so. For around $7000, you can put together a pretty decent studio. Obviously you can spend more.

What’s are some things that every guitarist shoud have for half decent home recording?

I’m doing home recording. I want something it to be quality but not PRO EXPENISVE. So far I been recording but all I have is a MIC and a PC with a recording program and thats it. What are some Items i need(mixers, stuff etc that I need) Thanks!

you’ve already got what you need.

recording is all about the input levels….

if you have software…there should be an EQ in the effects tab for that track….

if that first recoding doesn’t come out as well as you like….try to EQ it..it that fails…re-record….

relax..enjoy your tools..and have some fun….GL

What notebooks are good for home recording?

I am looking to get a notebook purely for the purpose of home recording my music.

At the moment I’m using a laptop but it is slow and shared with other people in my family so i don’t have a lot of memory space I can use.

I would prefer a notebook to a laptop because I don’t have a lot of money. I am looking to spend no more than £400 if i can.

Thanks for any help you gave give
:)

A notebook and a laptop are the same thing. I think maybe you mean a Netbook which usually has a very weak Atom processor. I wouldn’t recommend it as they will probably be phased out this year in favor of PADS.

Home recording Mixing Tips Ep 2 (Part A) Mixing the rhythm section, Drums bass, guitars

This is Episode 2 part A.
In this lesson I will talk about how to mix a rhythm section and things to think about when you’re making a mix. The song I am using is called “Breaking Away” by Max Rougier watch Episode 1 for more details about his song.

I am using Garageband 09 but the mixing tips & concepts will apply to all multi track recordings.

What Items/Equipment do i need for a home recording studio ?

I am currently setting up my first home recording system. I want to buy cheap and affordable equipment for singing. So far i have bought a microphone, headphones, pop filter, and a mic stand. What other items do i need?

I heard that i need a hard drive, audio interface, and mixer. what are these things? and do i need them ?

The other stuff you might need is going to depend on a couple of things:

First is the mic–you didn’t say what kind of mic it is, but if it’s got a cord with a USB connector on it, it’s designed to plug directly into a computer. That will work fine, as long as you don’t ever want to record two things at the same time.

The end of the mic may have three pins on it, like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/15/Xlr-connectors.jpg/800px-Xlr-connectors.jpg

That is what is know as an "XLR" connector, and it’s the standard for microphone connectors.

If you’ve got a USB mic, you’ll need to run it to a computer to record with it–I just did a quick check, and didn’t run across any mixers or standalone recorders that will take a USB input. In addition to the computer, you’ll need some sort of recording software. Windows does come with an audio recorder, but it’s really limited in what it will do. I use a software package called Cubase, but there are others out there that people have had good luck with.

If your mic is an XLR, you’ll either need an adapter to plug it into a computer, you can look at getting a mixer with a USB out to your computer, or you can get a standalone recorder that uses a hard drive to record your music.

A mixer is just a piece of equipment that allows you to take more than one sound source, and combine them. It can then output the sound to a computer or dedicated recorder. It allows you to set the levels of the sound (so that you get a mix that you like), pan individual sounds from right to left, and some of them include effects like reverb. In my home studio, I’ve got a 12 channel mixer that I run four or five keyboards, drum machine, and a couple of mics through. (It also came with a free copy of Cubase that I run on the laptop I record on).

If that sounds like a bit of overkill, look at a standalone multi-track recorder. These usually have a simple mixer built in, so they will handle the mixing, recording, and burning to a CD, all in one package. You don’t get as many inputs, but if you don’t need them, that’s probably the cheapest way to go.

I’d suggest you get a music stand–that way, you can put a lyric sheet on it, and not have to hold it while you’re singing
