Q: Could you consider making a video all about doubling up on tracks to increase the thickness of a guitar part during a recording? I notice you do it on your videos and it sounds great. But, when I do it on my recordings, they don’t have much of a difference in the sound when I play them back. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A: Recording the same guitar part on another track is an excellent idea that can help a recording sound much bigger than having only one single track. Many times when players start doing home recording and they try this concept, a common problem is that their parts come off sounding weaker, rather than bigger! What often gets over-looked is something known as frequency cancellation. Two identical signals tend to start cancelling each other out. The smart way to double-up tracks is to have the second track you record be slightly different from the 1st track.

What would I choose if I had 500€ or 1000€? You have to make your own choices though – depending on how much you want to use keybard(s) or guitar(s), what you want to record via microphones, etc.

Take this rather as an inspiration and take your time before you buy anything. I made a few not so good acquisitions, so don’t rush things when you’re unsure. Check out reviews by pros for quality considerations and forums for real user experiences.

For microphones, get a condenser as it will work on all the sources you mentioned. Condensers are more sensitive and take in a wider field of sound, so it sounds more natural and open versus a dynamic which is better for loud guitar cabinets and loud singing.

The cheapest condenser I recommend is the Audio Technica AT2020: http://bit.ly/sQcJJJ

For audio interfaces with MIDI, check out the Focusrite USB 6 (http://bit.ly/ucIfrA) and Roland Quad Capture (http://tinyurl.com/3qxvvw4). Both are very good interfaces.

If you want to get even better results, you will need to invest in some acoustic treatment for your recording space. At the very minimum, a heavy blanket or mattress hung 1 meter behind you and another hung 1/2 to 1 meter behind the microphone. This is needed to reduce room echo, flutter, bad resonances that will make your recordings sound stuffy.

If you want to invest in a really nice sounding vocal mic, get the Shure SM7B (http://bit.ly/rUFV8N). With that one, you don’t need acoustic treatment, just make sure the mic is pointing away from walls and corners.

At the minimum, learn how to use compression and equalization plugins in your recording program, these make all the difference when used correctly.

Condenser microphone- use this to record acoustic guitar, singing, rapping. This is a type of microphone used to capture "delicate sounds"

Headphones- use these to listen to recordings, etc. Once you get down the road, you might want to consider studio monitors, but headphones are a must-have for a studio

Cables- a 1/4 inch and a XLR
