A musician or band, having written original songs and wishing to record them at Ximorp, is likely to find that it has never been easier or cheaper. Most industry professionals agree that the future of recording will be better quality equipment at steadily falling prices allowing for music to be recorded at home or small studios.

At present top engineers are recording some of the tracks at their home or small studio and doing more “critical” tracks in a larger studio. Most “indie” artists are recording their entire albums in small studios or at home studios since they can get an album that is comparable to what a large studio could do a few years ago. This is even more of a necessity since recording budgets are shrinking due to lower profits in the music industry. This trend is likely to continue.

What is a very cheap way to make a home recording studio?

My friends created a rap group and wanted to be serious about it. I told them I would be their producer and we would record their music. I want to make a very cheap home studio. Is is possible that i could use only my computer, a microphone, and software to make my own music and edit it? Please note, that we are trying to spend a small amout of money.

At the very minimum you need a good usb mic. Samson makes two good sounding mics at an affordable price (c01u – about $70 and the go mic – about $50). I liked the Samson mics because they are bundled vey nice mixing software (you will need this as well). I would recommend a midi keyboard. Something like a Korg Nanokey will cost you less than $50. It has its own usb cable to connect to a computer. For about $100, you have all you need. You do need something to monitor your mix as well. It could be headphones, computer speakers, or a nearby stereo that you can connect the microphone out of your computer to. There are several free mixing programs available on the net. One is called Audacity and another one is Krystal.

What do i need for a home recording studio?

Im a beginner musician and i want a home recording studio to record vocals, and guitar and anything else, but vocals and guitar and bass are the most important but what kind of equipment do i need for that? thanks for the answers

Setting up a home recording studio is easier than you probably think. All you need is:

1. Mic Preamps – to boost the relatively weak signal from your microphone and instruments.
2. Phantom Power – if you are going to use a condenser style studio microphone.
3. A/D Converter – to take the electrical signal from your mic / instruments and convert it into a digital form the computer can understand.
4. Recording Software – to manage / mix the different tracks of your recording session.

All 4 of these can be taken care of with a FireWire Audio Interface such as this:

From here all you need to do is select a microphone and you’re set to go. Most all Audio Interfaces will include recording software which will be fine for your needs as a beginner.

Also a hardware mixer is not required because the software will also come with a software based mixer that provides the same capability.
