Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question…

Q: Could you consider making a video all about doubling up on tracks to increase the thickness of a guitar part during a recording? I notice you do it on your videos and it sounds great. But, when I do it on my recordings, they don’t have much of a difference in the sound when I play them back. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Brayden — Spokane, Washington USA

A: Recording the same guitar part on another track is an excellent idea that can help a recording sound much bigger than having only one single track. Many times when players start doing home recording and they try this concept, a common problem is that their parts come off sounding weaker, rather than bigger! What often gets over-looked is something known as frequency cancellation. Two identical signals tend to start cancelling each other out. The smart way to double-up tracks is to have the second track you record be slightly different from the 1st track.

Newbie home recording tutorial (7): Home Studio – Budget Examples

Episode 7: Home Studio – Budget Examples
This is the second part of the Budget Examples, see the previous Episode 6: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5olV6yphC4Q

What would I choose if I had 500€ or 1000€? You have to make your own choices though – depending on how much you want to use keybard(s) or guitar(s), what you want to record via microphones, etc.

Take this rather as an inspiration and take your time before you buy anything. I made a few not so good acquisitions, so don’t rush things when you’re unsure. Check out reviews by pros for quality considerations and forums for real user experiences.

How to set up an in-home recording studio?

Hi, I’ve been playing piano, guitar, accordion, sitar in addition to singing for several years now, and I would like to start actually recording my music now. What is the minimum I need to get started recording decently from home? I also am looking for a keyboard that can hook up to a computer to transcribe music as I play.
Many thanks in advance for the advice.

You would need at least 1 XLR microphone and 1 USB audio interface with MIDI input (for your keyboard — check that your keyboard has MIDI out).

For microphones, get a condenser as it will work on all the sources you mentioned. Condensers are more sensitive and take in a wider field of sound, so it sounds more natural and open versus a dynamic which is better for loud guitar cabinets and loud singing.

The cheapest condenser I recommend is the Audio Technica AT2020: http://bit.ly/sQcJJJ

For audio interfaces with MIDI, check out the Focusrite USB 6 (http://bit.ly/ucIfrA) and Roland Quad Capture (http://tinyurl.com/3qxvvw4). Both are very good interfaces.

If you want to get even better results, you will need to invest in some acoustic treatment for your recording space. At the very minimum, a heavy blanket or mattress hung 1 meter behind you and another hung 1/2 to 1 meter behind the microphone. This is needed to reduce room echo, flutter, bad resonances that will make your recordings sound stuffy.

If you want to invest in a really nice sounding vocal mic, get the Shure SM7B (http://bit.ly/rUFV8N). With that one, you don’t need acoustic treatment, just make sure the mic is pointing away from walls and corners.

If you need tutorials on how to record, check out http://www.macprovideo.com and http://www.recordingreview.com

At the minimum, learn how to use compression and equalization plugins in your recording program, these make all the difference when used correctly.

Is there a website or book that I could read to learn how to isolate my home recording studio?

I have an empty room that I would like to convert into a home recording studio. I would like to build an isolation booth to record drums and other instruments (guitar, bass). What would be the recommended isolation process I should follow for both recording quality and avoid problems with my neighbors?
I do not have any recording equipment yet. No big budget either, this is a slow project I would like to start this year.

Here is one site. There are quite a few others.

What is the best buy for some starter at-home recording equipment?

I have some songs that i plan on recording at home. I need to be able to record singing, rapping, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and electric bass. While i don’t need absolute top-of-the-line stuff, I’d like my recordings to sound professional enough. ie. not looking for the cheapest option but rather the most bang for my buck. Any suggestions?

Hey it’s so great that you want to record at home!
Here is a list of stuff that you need, and to get the most bang for your buck. I am going to direct you to zZounds because they are the cheapest place to purchase your stuff. If you find a lower price then contact them and they will do something about that.

Condenser microphone- use this to record acoustic guitar, singing, rapping. This is a type of microphone used to capture "delicate sounds"
http://www.zzounds.com/a–2926080/item–SAMCO1 — this is a well known "bang for your buck" type of microphone

Dynamic microphone- use this to record electric guitar, more rugged sounds
http://www.zzounds.com/a–2926080/item–SHUSM57LC — this is a "Shure" microphone, you can’t go wrong with them

USB Mixer- this will take care of mixing all your instruments, recording your bass, and transferring all the signals to your computer via USB
http://www.zzounds.com/a–2926080/item–BEHX1204USB — going with a USB mixer is definitely the cheaper way to go rather than an audio interface, but it will still sound professional

Headphones- use these to listen to recordings, etc. Once you get down the road, you might want to consider studio monitors, but headphones are a must-have for a studio
http://www.zzounds.com/a–2926080/item–AUTATHM40FS — these are definitely pro-grade headphones but for a relatively low price

Cables- a 1/4 inch and a XLR
http://www.zzounds.com/a–2926080/item–MONS100S — you can’t go wrong with Monster
http://www.zzounds.com/a–2926080/item–CBIMLC — great quarter inch cable

Software- you can definitely use the free open source Audacity but Pro Tools can really enhance your recording
Download for Audacity- http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Pro Tools- http://www.zzounds.com/a–2926080/item–AVDPROTOOLS

For any other tips go to http://www.homemusicgear.com!
We would love to talk to you!
Good Luck!
