Besides, “P” might be interpreted as “Pass” and that would certainly send the wrong signal.

Pink, c’mon, be fair. America has some of the most beautiful natural parks and though I’m a bit afraid of bridges in the Mid West, the Interstate Highway System (pretty much a product of government intervention) is pretty good. The post office pales in comparison to Japan Post (semi private), but way way way better than Canada Poste (also semi private, but government subsidized). And to remain objective, remember Federal funding aside, most public schools are locally managed.

Can we grade some of these public instituitons as “P” for parasitic?

    For bipolar manic …
For bipolar manic liberals, news flash! Socialism or socialized ANYTHING runs on top of capitalism. Any improvement in a socialized structure is directly attributable to the market at work. Any flaws are due to market externalities or strains that the parasitic socialist structure places on the market, but capitalism like the market is always at play. Capitalism (differentiated from “Free Market Capitalism”), like the market itself, is ever present. Read Marx and Angel for insight on that topic.

    sob8896–Also, the …
sob8896–Also, the argument here in the US is basically why would we want the atrocious “public school version” of health care? We’re determined to design something better.

Another question you may ask is why isn’t mandatory auto insurance socialized? Could health ins. follow that model? Benefits: no employer relationship (gone), cheaper because more widely available, larger member pool. Coupled with HSAs, maybe there’s a viable solution.

    sob8896–By stating …
sob8896–By stating “system of hospital rankings means the improvements of the market operate within a state run system” you’re tacitly admitting that “state run”/socialized means lack of improvement, and that market forces are necessary to maintain efficiency and to *create incentive*.

    There will always …
There will always be debates. Discussing the matter isn’t the problem. What’s starting to happen, mostly on the fringes for the time being, is ideologues want to silence dissent. You’ve got Pelosi (in the majority) talking about restoring the Fairness Doctrine, the Whitehouse trying to discredit news organizations. Thank goodness for crappy ol’ YouTube! At least we can still disseminate information and have good ol’ drag-it-out debate over the issues!

  • seismedia says:

    John, there’s no …
John, there’s no inevitable with respect to getting slammed with costs. It’s here, now, we’re already getting slammed. It’s pay up time. You want coverage, open your wallet. But here’s the difference in our positions – I’ll open up my wallet because of MY needs and wants, but Washington wants to pick my pocket against my will and set the terms. Well, they can pry my wallet from my dead cold fingers. These won’t even read the bill they plan on imposing on us, and you want to trust them?!

    That is the modern …
That is the modern version of Democracy. A never ending arguement no matter who is in charge. With talk radio and 24 hour news it will never be any different.

    Conclusion – …
Conclusion – Obamacare is a sham! It’s simply a device for the useless idiots in Washington to generate a divisive debate, fixing nothing, wasting money, and if our worst fears are to be realized, capturing more liberties and dollars to centralize in the Federal Government, leaving less in our hands and the hands of the states. If these goons really cared, they’d strike out every provision that didn’t actually lower the cost, not just shift money by creating new entitlements and new taxes.

  • john777316 says:

    Good post there …
Good post there Seis. That is all the more reason for a medical safety net. The points you are making about age and health are unavoidable so we need to find a way to take care of the population before we get slammed with a huge critical care bill that 50% of the people can’t afford. It is either that or just cut them off and let them die.

  • seismedia says:

    So, which of these …
So, which of these costs does Obamacare actually address? It may shift and transfer money (hardly an efficient process), but does it actually lower any costs? And PRICE controls do not equate to COST controls. The market determines the price (supply v demand), whereas only the supplier can control costs. The ONLY shot the government has at fixing HC, is through tort reform or through paperwork reduction. The former is a State power and the latter is hardly something government is good at.

  • seismedia says:

    Problem Summary – …
Problem Summary – Americans want great healthcare, but won’t do much to take care of themselves. Tech advances provide more quick fixes in RX, diagnostics, and procedures, but come at a cost of R&D $. We’re also getting older and fatter but want to live longer. We also use the courts to extort outrageous tort rewards which drains $ while adding paperwork. MDs, RNs, Techs need to get paid for their training and long hours. The demand is high. Folks, this all costs money.

  • seismedia says:

    I’ve read what some …
I’ve read what some doctors have said. About 15% of MDs belong to AMA and it’s sharply defines the split in practitioner opinion. Many of the 85% now refuse Medicare/Medicaid because of various bureaucratic problems, but many doctors are talking about turning away public option enrollees, retiring, or moving back to home countries. Some of it is obviously the chatter of frustrated MDs, but it does indicate we’ll experience a shortage and not a surplus of practitioners, a problem we already face.

    Wait Ladies, there …
Wait Ladies, there will be a new tax on Tampons, too! Gotta pay for all that crunchy goodness in Obamacare! What’s really sad is that after all the grand standing about 47M uninsured, the CBO estimates that there will still be over 20M uninsured, but it will cost almost $900B to implement. When taxes on medical devices, on “high end” plans, and penalties for failure to enroll are used an offset, it will be “Deficit Neutral”, but you can’t rob Peter to pay Paul and tell me we came out ahead!

  • seismedia says:

    If you’re referring …
If you’re referring to my anecdotes about British Physicians (too bad YouTube doesn’t let you know the “respond to” comment), they were not an argument, but more of a humorous observation. I guess the only reason why I can laugh about it now is that I have a leg to stand on and my head still turns. The British doctors I met were in Canada, the US, and China, so obviously while it might say something about UK medical TRAINING, it says nothing about the British NHS. That’s a different argument.

  • sab8896 says:

Man this is such a …
Man this is such a load of crap. Its a typical right wing arguing style, to use an individual case study to prove a wider point to which it has no relation.

Britain has excellent health care for all, its cheaper than the American system, Doctors are paid well, and the system of hospital rankings means the improvements of the market operate within a state run system.

However I couldnt care less what you think – as Britain will never give up the NHS as we realise how great it is.

  • DarthMai says:

    Now this great …
Now this great health care plan is going to tax mobility chair, artificial heart, prosthetics, knee, hip and joint replacements, defibrillator, etc..those medical devices used by disabled and elderly. This is Communist style health care.

    Thanks for …
Thanks for clarifying! Scared me for a moment there that BC went all crazy – can you imagine a 17% VAT!? Glad it’s no higher than 12%, but still, that’s got to hurt every time you pull out your wallet!

I left my home and native land when GST was introduced in 1990 at 7%. Don’t know if you remember that, but it was a temporary tax committed to eliminating Canada’s national debt. That was 20 years ago. GST is still around, albeit 2 points lower now, but I think Canada is still running a debt…
