Newbie home recording tutorial (5): Home Studio Introduction
Episode 5: Home Studio Introduction
How can home studio look like? How is it connected?
Realize, please, that different needs result in different studio. I’d change some things in my studio now, but some of my equipment was bought before I planned to have a studio like this. There is no room treatment, I’m quite tight on budget – and I also have to share the room with my family.
Do you need guitars? Two microphones? Maybe with electric-acoustic guitar you don’t need any condenser microphone. Do you record voices? Do you create rather electronic music? Do you really need mixing console? There are tons of questions you have to ask first.

Recording Studio At Home … What Program Could I Use To Fix Vocals ? *click for more please*?
What i am refering to by FIX is this :
while singing, some notes seem to be very LOUD while others are low.
i was using a free program called AUDACITY, but when you click ‘Normalize’ it normalizes the entire song, not just the parts that are too loud.
I want a program that will scan the song and automatically lower the loud parts.
You can do what you want with Audacity..
The effect is compression.
The loud parts "peaks" are reduced in level evening out the dynamic range.
1: Highlight the whole track. (left click blank section of left hand panel or use ctrl+a).
2: Click Effect.
3: Click Compressor.
4: Leave the threshold at about minus 12 dB to start with.
5: Select compression ratio. This will depend on how loud the peaks are.
Try 8:1 to start with then assess from there.
This is a judgment call depending on the track so trial and error is needed.
Another method is using the envelope tool if there are only a few loud peaks but that’s another process. E-mail me if you want to know how.
Two basic tutorials:

Most recording or live vocalists I’ve seen or worked with tend to keep the microphone at a constant distance from their mouth.
They rely on compression to fix the dynamic range problem.
Others constantly move the mic in and out to compensate for loud passages.
They know they’re going to sing a loud note so move the mic away when it is sung.
Takes practice but the least electronic interference the better.
Leads to a "cleaner" recording.
The dynamic range is the difference between the quietest and loudest passages of a recording.
What equipment do you need to make a recording studio at home? about how much would it all cost?
At the very least, you could get a little digital 8-track recorder from Fostex or Tascam for probably $300-400. Then you’ll need a couple mics, cords, etc. If you want to record more than a couple things at a time I would suggest buying a little 8 or 16 channel mixer. Behringer is pretty good to start with. You could get that for probably about $300 or less.
Or you could go the computer route and buy an interface. You’d still probably want the mixer, as audio interfaces with more than 2 channels can be pretty pricey.
All in all, you could get a decent starter setup for under $1000. Just keep adding to it. The most important thing is to learn how to properly use the equipment. Buy some books or check out some sites like http://www.recording.org – that site has a great forum you can learn a lot on.
Good luck!
Recording a mixtape; studio or home? (Chicago area).?
Hi,
I’am planning on recording a mixtape. I live in the Chiacago suburbs. The question is, would it be better to buy your own mike (whatever comes with it) and try to record at home or actually rent a studio for couple hours?
If so, what are some good once around chicago that wont make me go bunkrupt?
Thanks in advance.
It would have better sound quality if you recorded at a studio.
Depending upon what you want and how much your willing to spend Universal Recording is outstanding. 312-782-0011
