A PC with audio input jack and sound mixing software should do the trick. Go through the FAQ below.
What is the best audio recording software?
I am building a home studio and I want to know what would the best software for recording music would be. Price is not as important as quality for me. I know of Pro Tools already and would like other suggestions.
FL Studio is a good program for producing and recording. I use it and most of the artists I know use it for their music. You can try out the free full featured demo here: http://flstudio.image-line.com/
If you end up deciding to buy it, here’s a promotional link for new customers to get 10% off: https://support.image-line.com/jshop/shop.php?offer=Default&promo=EDAJCI416

What do you need to do to set up a home recording studio?
i am setting up a studio for my friend so he can record stuff. Its going to be in my room so what would i have to do to make it sound good in there. its carpeted floors and only one small window and i live in a decently quit neighborhood. I want to keep it still my room but what could i do to make it sound better. what should be in there and what shouldnt (dresser, desk and table are both wooden). What basic equipment would i need to buy? my friend has a keyboard so dont say that. i just want to at least get him started with a few cd’s to get known and for my boyfriend to hear since hes already making it happen (has a cd n our stores around here and just did a show with kottonmouth kings in arizona). well my friend does freestyle rap if that has to do with what is good to buy. i will only have 3000 to spend right now but will be having more soon. this is my gift to him for helping me out for when i needed it. id appreciate if you guys could help me do this for him. thanks.
As you’re fall into electronic music categories, I highly suggest you go with a computer based music production. It will give you the best flexibility in the long run. And 3000 is a good starting point.
You must start with a properly build computer, good audio interface and a nice music software. Here’s two too start with: Steinberg Cubase and Properllerhead Reason.
You also need good studio monitor (ex. Adam A7) and a nice decent condensor mic (ex. Rode NT2A). And for the room, you might consider buying some acoustic treatment (ex. Auralex have lots of good starter kit). Its more for monitoring accuracy rather than sound isolation. And good connector and cabling is essential too.
Oh and don’t forget to buy some recording magazine like:
- EQ
- Electronic Musican
- Sound on Sound
Good luck.
