Free Music Recording Software for Computer?

I am a songwriter and I cannot afford a high end computer or software or equipment to use Pro-Tools, and I can’t afford to get a McIntosh with Garageband.

What I am looking for is basically a semi-easy to use recording program for Windows that allows me to record at least 4-tracks of music that can be mixed and leveled. I also need it to allow for recording to be done on cheap Mics that plug into the standard (pink) Mic Jack on computers.

I know I will not have many special features, but I simply need the ability to record and mix at least 4 tracks together on my computer so I can remember and work with ideas better.

Please help, I am able to spend a little money (maybe $50.00 at most) but I would very much prefer some free software. Thank you.

Audacity is a free recording program.

AudioSkull has free samples for music production.

Is Garageband for Mac any good when it comes to digital audio recording?

I don’t know anyone with a Mac, and none of my friends are very interested in music. I would like to find software that would let me record my music in better quality, as my Olympus voice recorder is OK, but not made for music recording. Any help, suggestions, ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!!
How does it sound? Is it difficult to learn for a non-Mac user?

Garageband offers 16 bit and 24 bit recording at 44.1 kHz. By definition, CDs are 16 bit, 44.1 kHz, so GarageBand can record and export better than CD.

From GarageBand Help:
By default, GarageBand records and exports audio at CD quality (44.1 kHz sample rate, 16-bit depth). You can have GarageBand record Real Instrument regions and export projects at a higher audio resolution (24-bit depth).

Is it illegal for someone to make an audio recording of someone without their knowledge?

Note:
The audio recording is made from a "hidden device" (pretty much its hidden or its not something you would normally expect to be a recorder)
This is within the state of Massachusetts and New York
This is an audio recording made in the physical presence of the person and the person recording is a part of the conversation being recorded

While the U.S. federal law only requires one-party consent, many states have accepted different laws. In some states all parties must give their consent or at least be notified that the call is about to be recorded (with necessary opt-out option: if you don’t like them to record the call, you can ask them to stop recording). There also was a case law decision from many years ago (the 1950’s) that went to the Supreme Court and affirmed that the federal law does not supersede state authority/statutes unless the call or the tap crosses state lines – that is why each state went ahead and established their own guideline/statute.

UNFORTUNATELY MASS DOES NOT HAVE A ONE-PARTY CONSENT. HOWEVER, NEW YORK DOES.

During the movie Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, does anyone know what song was playing when Nick and Norah were making out on the couch in her father’s recording studio?

I really appreciate it, thanks in advance.

What Recording Equipment is best for my band?

I need to get a good, not too expensive way to record my bands music for the internet and CDs. we’ve got an acoustic, bass, drums, electric, keyboards, a singer, and random instruments I bring from the orchestra. We can record parts one at a time like a lot of programs do. but I don’t know where to go or what to get!!
Thanks!
Our CD will be fawsome! 100% fool!

since the cost of recording equipment is very expensive, you may want to all chip in and rent time in a professional studio that has everything and will cut you a demo.
